Sanitary protection products
2,000,000,000 sanitary products are flushed down the toilet each year causing serious pollution and damage to marine life. Bag It and Bin It Bags are available by mail order at The Natural Collection and other mail order companies.
- Don't flush sanitary protection down the toilet – dispose of it hygienically in rubbish.
- You can purchase re-usable and organic sanitary protection through mail order companies such as The Green Shop, and The Natural Collection.
- For advice on alternative sanitary protection products contact Women’s Environmental Network Advice Line, Telephone: 0207 481 9004.

Shoes (and other footwear)
- Repair footwear where possible. Even major repair of an old, comfortable pair of shoes is much cheaper and more sustainable than a new pair.
- Or donate to charity shops. (Pairs only, tied together.) See Dear Green Place Map for a list of charity shops.
- Or put in Textile Banks (pairs only, tied together) at civic amenity sites.
Soap and shampoo
- Try to buy shampoo and soap in large, refillable bottles. Buy a bar of soap rather than liquid or gel soap as it lasts longer and uses less packaging.
- For maximum reusability, you can put soap scraps into a drawstring towelling bag and use it as a wash bag. You can even add dried herbs, such as lavender or chamomile, or oatmeal.
- You can also recycle soap scraps into new soap bars. Place the scraps in a saucepan, cover with water and allow to soak for 24 hours, giving an occasional stir. Bring to the boil, remove from heat and add a tablespoon of vegetable oil to each cupful of the soap mixture. Pour the mixture into suitable moulds and allow to harden for two weeks before use.
Sort-it
Sort It is a website, which aims to provide you with useful information and practical advice on how you can reduce, reuse and recycle your household waste throughout Scotland. Sort It lists a wide range of local and national outlets and facilities.
Stamps
- Try and reuse the envelopes first.
- You can send used stamps to charities. See Dear Green Place Map for a list of charity shops.
Stationery
- Try to use pens and highlighters that are refillable. Instead of countless plastic biros, why not invest in a refillable fountain pen and a bottle of ink (not cartridges)? Other recycled/recyclable office products/stationery and refill for highlighters can be purchased online at Green Earth Office Supply or at or any other mail order companies.
